Michael Hedges: Aerial Boundaries

Michael Hedges was a truly gifted acoustic guitar player and composer. His technically demanding approach contained elements of advanced finger-style and two-handed tapping techniques. The combination of his elaborate compositions and technique would produce the sound of several guitars playing together.

While Michael had a love of rock and pop styles he earned a classical degree in composition at Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore. Often associated with the New Age genre, he transformed acoustic finger-style guitar into an entirely new form of music.

Through his career, two of his albums were Grammy nominated. He has also received Guitar Player Magazine reader’s poll award for “best acoustic guitarist” several times.

Michael was also a powerful stage performer and established a deep connection with his fans. As a true artist, he had the ability to write from within himself on his journey of discovery and mirror that to his audience.

On December 2nd, 1997 Michael passed away in a car accident in California. This video clip was taken just a few months before. It features a dynamic performance of “Aerial Boundaries”, the title track off his masterpiece.
