Billy Gibbons is best known as the lead guitar player and vocalist in the Texas based blues-rock band ZZ Top. Formed in 1967 the band has played together for 40 years while still maintaining the original lineup. Known for their long beards and southern style, the band is heavily steeped in the blues and rock and roll. ZZ Top was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on March 15th 2004.
Billy is an extremely tasteful guitar player and is known as a blues-rock guitar great. His signature sound is built on a solid foundation of blues licks in combination with his unique pitch harmonics. He is also an excellent slide player. Another large part of Billy’s sound is his choice of gear. A long time vintage guitar collector, his signature Les Paul sound can be heard on the early ZZ Top albums. Citing Muddy Waters as his “musical and spiritual godfather”, Billy had a custom guitar built from the wood of Muddy’s childhood home in Mississippi.
This is a clip taken from a 2004 performance at Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Guitar Festival in Dallas, Texas. It`s a great clip of ZZ Top preforming the classic songs La Grange and Tush. Enjoy!
